This bottle is signed by the late legendary Managing Director, Paul Pontallier.  The 1964 vintage in Bordeaux is historically famous for a dramatic harvest. While the Right Bank (Saint-Émilion and Pomerol) had a stellar year, the Médoc saw heavy rains during the harvest. However, top estates like Château Margaux that picked earlier or had exceptional drainage managed to produce wines of great character and elegance.

The Highlights

  • Vintage: 1964

  • Region/Appellation: Margaux, Bordeaux, France

  • Producer: Château Margaux

  • Grape: A classic Left Bank blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

  • Style: Fully mature, elegant, and medium-bodied Red Bordeaux.

  • Tasting Profile: An exquisite, delicate bouquet featuring notes of dried rose petals, violets, cedarwood, and old leather. The palate is soft and savory, showing flavors of dried currants, forest floor, tobacco leaf, and sweet autumn spices.

  • Perfect for (Food Pairing): * Simple Roasted Meats: A delicate roast chicken with herbs or a milk-fed lamb to avoid overpowering the aged wine.

    • Fine Game: Roasted partridge or pheasant.

    • Mushroom-Based Dishes: A simple truffle omelet or wild mushroom consommé.

    • Note: Given the extreme age of this wine, it is often best enjoyed on its own or with very simple accompaniments to let the subtle aromatics shine.
