Château d'Yquem is the only estate in history to be granted the status of Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 Classification—essentially placing it in a category above all other sweet wines. The 1983 vintage is legendary in Sauternes; while the red wines of Bordeaux were overshadowed by the 1982s, the 1983 sweet wines were vastly superior.

At this age, the wine has moved from its youthful bright gold to a stunning "copper-orange" or "pale amber" hue, signaling a massive concentration of flavor.

Technical Profile

  • Vintage: 1983

  • Region/Appellation: Sauternes, Bordeaux, France (1er Cru Supérieur)

  • Producer: Château d'Yquem (Lur-Saluces era)

  • Grape: Typically a blend of 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc.

  • Style: Luscious, unctuous, and sweet, but famously balanced by a "racy" acidity that prevents it from ever feeling cloying.

  • Perfect for (food pairing): The classic "1+1=3" pairing is Seared Foie Gras with a pinch of sea salt. It is also heavenly with Roquefort or Stilton blue cheese. For a modern luxury twist, try it with Spicy Asian Cuisine (like Szechuan duck) or, given your new focus, a very salty, high-grade caviar—the sweet-and-salty contrast is world-class.
