The name "Darmagi" translates to "what a pity" (quel dommage) in Piedmontese dialect. Legend has it that when Angelo Gaja planted Cabernet Sauvignon in the heart of Barbaresco in 1978, his father, Giovanni, exclaimed "Darmagi!" because he felt it was a pity to plant international varieties in such prestigious Nebbiolo terroir.
Highlights
-
Vintage: 1995
-
Region/Appellation: Langhe DOC, Piedmont, Italy
-
Producer: Gaja
-
Grape: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc
-
Style: Bold, structured, and long-lived. While Gaja is known for modernizing the region, this wine retains an Old World elegance with firm, integrated tannins and high-toned acidity.
-
Perfect for: Slow-braised beef cheeks, venison with a red wine reduction, or hard aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino. It is also an exceptional choice for a vertical tasting of Italian "super-Piedmont" wines.
Collector's Note: The 1995 vintage is considered a very strong year in Piedmont. At this stage, the wine is fully mature and should be decanted carefully for at least 30–45 minutes to allow the bouquet to fully open up after three decades in the bottle.
