This is a fully mature Grand Cru Classé benchmark from Pessac-Léognan: the historic Château Pape Clément 1997. As one of the oldest wine estates in Bordeaux—with harvests dating back to the 13th century under Pope Clement V—Pape Clément is famous for producing wines of remarkable plushness, smokey gravel minerality, and rich aromatic intensity. The 1997 vintage yielded exceptionally supple, forward, and harmonious expressions across Bordeaux, and this bottle has evolved after nearly three decades into a prime window of tertiary drinking maturity. The nose opens with an inviting bouquet of cassis, dark plum preserves, and black cherries, seamlessly layered with hallmark Graves notes of warm gravelly earth, cigar box cedar, roasted coffee, cured leather, dried tobacco leaf, and a touch of dark cocoa. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, velvety, and wonderfully balanced, where the estate's plush tannic structure has softened into fine silk, supported by a fresh spine of natural acidity that carries into a long, dry, and savory mineral finish.
