First released in 1985, The Armagh is named after the nearby hamlet of Armagh, settled by Irish immigrants. The vineyard was planted by Jim Barry in 1968 on a northwest-facing slope with low-fertility, sandy gravel soils. These "starved" vines produce tiny, concentrated berries that yield a wine of massive intensity.

The 2000 vintage was a successful year for Jim Barry, resulting in a wine that Halliday and other critics have praised for its "high octane" but balanced delivery.

Technical Profile

  • Vintage: 2000

  • Region/Appellation: Clare Valley, South Australia

  • Producer: Jim Barry Wines

  • Grape: 100% Shiraz

  • Style: Full-bodied, opulent, and muscular. It is a "powerhouse" wine that balances intense dark fruit with savory earthiness.

  • Perfect for (food pairing): This is a wine for big flavors. It is a legendary match for dry-aged ribeye steak, slow-braised lamb shanks, or venison with a blackberry reduction. For your luxury offerings, it pairs beautifully with strong, hard cheeses like an extra-mature cheddar or a vintage Mimolette.
