This is an exceptionally rare, legendary cult masterpiece: the Pignan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservé from the beautifully mature 2012 vintage. Crafted by the iconoclastic Emmanuel Reynaud, Pignan is the highly coveted sister label to the world's most famous Grenache benchmark, Château Rayas. Sourced from distinct parcels of ancient vines planted on the estate's unique, north-facing sandy soils, this wine is produced with uncompromising, old-world methods including whole-cluster fermentation in neutral oak foudres. The 2012 vintage yielded a wine of incredible refinement and structural poise, which has evolved beautifully over more than a decade in the bottle. It opens with an intoxicating, perfumed bouquet of wild raspberries, dried cherries, and macerated strawberries, seamlessly layered with Rayas-family signatures of white pepper, garrigue, exotic spices, and sweet incense. On the palate, it exhibits a trademark weightless, ethereally silken texture that masks an astonishing depth of concentrated red fruit, balanced by vibrant acidity and incredibly fine tannins that carry into an endlessly long, hauntingly complex, and savory mineral finish.
