This is an exceptionally rare, highly collected cult masterpiece: the Château de Fonsalette Côtes-du-Rhône Réservé Syrah from the 2014 vintage. Château de Fonsalette is the sister estate of the legendary Château Rayas, widely considered one of the ultimate holy grails in the entire wine world. Both properties are handled by the iconoclastic and deeply traditional winemaker Emmanuel Reynaud. While the standard Fonsalette red is a Grenache-dominated blend, Reynaud produces an incredibly minuscule, separate 100% Syrah bottling. Made with uncompromising old-world techniques—including whole-cluster fermentation in ancient, neutral oak foudres and absolutely no temperature control or filtration—this wine routinely outperforms Northern Rhône benchmarks in pure terroir expression, wild complexity, and physical cellaring potential.

Highlights

  • Vintage: 2014

  • Region/Appellation: Côtes-du-Rhône, Rhône Valley, France

  • Producer: Château de Fonsalette (Emmanuel Reynaud / Château Rayas)

  • Grape: 100% Syrah

  • Style: Complex, Ethereally Silken, and Deeply Savory Cult Red Rhône Wine

  • Perfect for (food pairing): Fine cuts of slow-roasted rack of lamb with a rosemary-garlic crust, roasted squab, pan-seared quail, or wood-fired prime ribeye steak. Its intricate, mature gamey notes and peppery undertones also make it a spectacular match for pan-seared duck breast with a mushroom reduction, slow-cooked wild boar stew, truffled risottos, or a well-curated plate of artisanal, mature hard cheeses such as an aged Comté or Gouda.
