This is an outstanding, cool-climate artisanal cult wine from one of Beechworth’s most uncompromising boutique producers: the Savaterre Pinot Noir 2016. Founded by vigneron Keppell Smith, Savaterre employs high-density close planting on ancient decomposed granite and clay soils, dry-farming low-yielding vines with an Old World, non-interventionist ethos. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in fine French oak barriques, this 2016 release has entered a prime maturity window of profound aromatic nuance and silky composure. The nose opens with an alluring, complex bouquet of dark cherries, spiced wild strawberries, and red plums, woven with dried rose petals, forest floor sous-bois, Asian spices, subtle game, and crushed granite minerality. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, supple, and finely balanced, showcasing a concentrated core of savory red fruit framed by fine, polished tannins and a vibrant streak of natural alpine acidity that extends into a long, perfumed, and persistent finish.

  • Vintage: 2016

  • Region/Appellation: Beechworth, Victoria, Australia

  • Producer: Savaterre (Keppell Smith)

  • Grape: 100% Pinot Noir

  • Style: Complex, Fragrant, Silky, and Terroir-Driven Artisanal Cool-Climate Pinot Noir
