The fruit for this bottling is sourced from the historic Steinert vineyard, situated in the high-altitude, cooler Eden Valley sub-region of Flaxman. The vineyard boasts legendary, ultra-low-yielding ancient vines—some of which are over 120 years old—growing in sandy loam over red clay and quartz soils.
The 2017 vintage is an exceptional testament to the cooler, more elegant growing season of that year, which allowed the fruit to retain spectacular aromatic purity and structural focus without sacrificing power. On the nose, it unveils an intensely complex bouquet of wild blackberries, dark plums, and crushed violets, tightly woven with notes of black pepper, anise, and a distinct, graphite-like mineral streak.
