This is a legendary, highly sought-after, cult-status Pinot Noir from Bell Hill, widely regarded as one of New Zealand's absolute pinnacle wine estates. Established in 1995 on a unique limestone slope in the Weka Pass area of North Canterbury, Bell Hill was designed to replicate the lime-rich conditions of Burgundy. This incredible micro-terroir allows them to produce wines of unparalleled structure, tension, and chalky minerality.
The 2021 vintage threw notable seasonal challenges at the estate, including spring frosts that significantly reduced yields. However, meticulous hand-sorting and painstaking attention to detail ensured that the remaining fruit was of spectacular quality. A minuscule production of just 3,729 bottles was drawn from an elite 13-barrel blend of their premium, organically farmed parcels—including the Shelf, Quarry Rootlings, Roadblock, and Slope.
In its youth, the 2021 release is intensely concentrated, brooding, and energetic. It opens with a complex, earthy, and aromatic bouquet of dried strawberries, wild raspberries, and hibiscus, closely woven with dried thyme, oyster shells, and delicate gunpowder smoke. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a brilliant, fine-boned elegance. It shows a tightly coiled, savory mid-palate of sour cherry, black peach, and dark chocolate, driven by a vibrant spine of crystalline acidity and framed by dusty, velvety, submerged tannins that lead into an exceptionally long, salivating, and distinctly saline mineral finish.
