This is a highly prized, exceptional village-level white Burgundy from the master of Puligny precision, Domaine Etienne Sauzet. While the domaine is globally celebrated for its elite Puligny-Montrachet holdings, its parcel within Chassagne-Montrachet's 'Les Encégnières' is a legendary insider favorite among collectors. The vineyard is uniquely positioned directly beneath the iconic Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, separated only by a narrow dirt pathway. Because it shares the same slope and high-grade clay-limestone soils as its Grand Cru neighbor, it consistently punches far above its official village classification, yielding a wine with incredible structural volume and aromatic depth.

The 2021 vintage in Burgundy is highly regarded by white wine purists as a classicist's dream. Following a highly challenging growing season marked by severe spring frosts, yields were drastically low, but the resulting fruit retained a spectacular, vibrant natural acidity and profound mineral focus reminiscent of the great legendary vintages of the 1990s.

Highlights

  • Vintage: 2021

  • Region/Appellation: Chassagne-Montrachet, Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France

  • Producer: Domaine Etienne Sauzet

  • Grape: 100% Chardonnay

  • Style: Taut, High-Tension, and Grand Cru-Adjacent Village White Burgundy

  • Perfect for (food pairing): Butter-poached rock lobster or marron tails, pan-seared sea scallops with fresh lemon-herb butter, classic Dover sole meunière, or pan-fried John Dory. Its magnificent structure, classic high-toned acidity, and clean mineral drive also make it an ideal companion for a premium service of fresh sturgeon caviar, roasted organic poultry with a light chanterelle cream sauce, or a plate of premium hard cheeses like a mature Comté or Beaufort.
